Nearly 20 years ago, I adopted a pit bull mix named Lily. She stole my heart, and I've been passionate about rescuing shelter dogs ever since. There are so many wonderful animals in shelters - some of whom have been abused and neglected - who have so MUCH love to give! If you're considering getting a dog, stop by your local shelter before you visit a breeder. A loyal and loving companion is waiting for you! Whether or not you can take in a new family member right now, consider donating to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), or your local shelter. They do amazing work rescuing animals in need.

A note about breed specific legislation: I abhor breed-specific legislation, and believe that pit bulls are not inherently more dangerous than any other dog. Any large dog can be dangerous if not well trained, and deadly if trained as an attack animal. If you actually get to know a pit bull, you'll find that they are incredibly sweet and loyal companions. Their nickname "velvet hippo" says it all. Please take a few minutes and check out some of the pittie-related links below.
